Police ID man fatally shot on Highway 101

Death may have been suicide

Brisbane police identified a man found shot to death Friday on southbound Highway 101 as Daniel Massimillo, 23, of San Francisco.

The highway was reopened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday after an investigation into the shooting kept lanes closed since Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident began around 9:55 p.m. Friday when a caller reported that a vehicle flashing its emergency lights had pulled to the right-hand shoulder of the highway, CHP Officer Shawn Chase said.

Arriving officers discovered a man with fatal gunshot wounds lying next to a white Ford Mustang Cobra on the highway shoulder, Chase said. The man was the vehicle's only occupant and died at the scene.

Brisbane police responded to investigate the shooting with assistance from other agencies, closing all southbound lanes.

Sgt. Mario Garcia of the Brisbane Police Department said there were some indications it may have been a suicide, but he would not disclose further details.

One lane reopened around 3 a.m., and the remaining lanes cleared around 4:20 a.m., CHP Officer Aaron Quistad said.
