Grimes shines for Menlo golf

The only golfer to break 70 in the Central Coast Section Boys Golf Championships was Menlo School's Patrick Grimes, who finished first with a 5-under round of 66. A freshman, Grimes sank six birdies on the day at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley.

"He plays in a number of high-pressure tournaments, so pressure is nothing new to him and it hasn't been to him for several, several years," Menlo coach Dave Lage said. "He enjoys playing, he enjoys the competition and the people he plays with."

The Peninsula Athletic League individual champ, Grimes will be joined at NorCals next week by fellow PAL competitor Daniel Semmler. The Carlmont golfer shot a 1-under 70, one of only three golfers to break par.

"It was a mystery as to why the results weren't a little bit lower," Lage said.

After just missing the cut for the U.S. Amateur this past weekend, the right-handed Grimes handled Rancho Canada masterfully, bogeying just once while pulling out the driver only when needed.

"His experience with a variety of courses has taught him to play smart," Lage said. "He knows his clubs, he knows how far he can hit it. He's pretty indescribable as a freshman."

Carmel won the team competition, with its top five golfers carding a combined 20-over 375. St. Francis-Mountain View was six strokes back, with David Rohrs' 75 leading the way. Also for the Lancers, Sean Nadir, Mike Kasiainchuk and Eric Runge all shot 76.

Menlo-Atherton (5th-389), Mountain View (6th-391) and Sacred Heart Prep (8th-397) missed out on the final team spot for NorCals, which went to Stevenson (381).

Mountain View's Spencer Fletcher and Adam Ichikawa shot a 72, finishing tied for sixth and one stroke shy of what they needed to force a playoff for the fourth and final individual spot to NorCals. Other top local finishers included Menlo-Atherton's Nick Sako and the Sacred Heart Prep duo of Jeff Knox and Dalan Refioglu, all three tying for ninth with a 74. Burlingame's Dash Lindell (22nd-76) and Los Altos' Davis Beckstead (29th-78) also cracked the top 30.
